smokeLESS™ Explained: How Our Patent-Pending Valve Changes Live-Fire Cooking

Every Sea Island Forge Kettle still starts the way it always has, raw cast ductile iron, shaped into a bowl designed to invite gatherings for generations. What's changed is what happens underneath the fire.

Our patent-pending smokeLESS™ valve sits at the base of the Kettle and does one job well. It feeds more oxygen to the core of the flame. Eleven square inches of fresh air intake increase the airflow, producing a cleaner, more efficient burn. The result is less smoke, more heat, better fuel efficiency, and an easier clean up.

What smokeLESS™ doesn't change

It doesn't change the fuel. The smokeLESS™ Kettle still burns real wood. The valve changes the airflow, not what's feeding the fire. For the best results, we recommend very dry wood. (Our kiln-dried firewood varietals, boxed to ship free nationwide, are a great option for both gathering and cooking.)

What smokeLESS™ doesn't claim

We don't claim it eliminates smoke completely, and we won't tell you it does. What the valve does is engineer the airflow so you get a hotter, cleaner burn with significantly less smoke than a traditional wood-burning Kettle. If you're cooking, add a little controlled moisture back into your wood and you'll still get the smoky flavor you're after. If you're just gathering, skip the moisture and let the valve do its job, less smoke, more time close to the fire.

Built to pair with everything you already own

Existing Sea Island Forge cooking attachments pair with the smokeLESS™ Kettle exactly the way they always have. This is an upgraded version of the traditional wood-burning Kettle, not a different system.

Attaching and removing the valve

Align the cross bars on the valve with the notches at the base of the Kettle, drop it into place, and give it a quarter turn to lock it in. That quarter turn keeps the valve from working loose if the fire poker brushes against it while you're cooking. To remove it for clean up, reverse the turn and lift it out, once the Kettle and valve are fully cool.

Available in both the 30 Gallon and 50 Gallon Kettle. View the smokeLESS™ Kettle
